Roanoke River at Smith Park (Wiley Drive)

The Greenway at Smith Park has been a popular route for bikers in the region for some time. It links two parks in the City of Roanoke (both the Wasena Park and the River's Edge Park near Victory Stadium). It is accessible from two major transportation routes (Elm Avenue and Franklin Road) allowing bikers and pedestrians to bypass traditional roads that allow motorized traffic.

Directions

From Interstate 581:

Take the Colonial Avenue exit and turn to your right. Take Colonial Avenue north to the stop light and turn left onto Brandon Avenue. Travel 1 mile to the intersection of Brandon and Main Street. Bear right onto Main Street. Travel 0.6 miles through the stop light at the Getty Mart and take a right onto Winona Avenue. Parking is straight ahead in the gravel parking lot.

From Mill Mountain Discovery Center:

Turn left off J. P. Fishburn Parkway on to Walnut Avenue. Take Walnut Avenue to S. Jefferson Street and turn right. Turn right on Elm Avenue. Take I-581/US 220 S. Take the Colonial Avenue exit and turn to your right. Take Colonial Avenue north to the stop light and turn left onto Brandon Avenue. Travel 1 mile to the intersection of Brandon and Main Street. Bear right onto Main Street. Travel 0.6 miles through the stop light at the Getty Mart and take a right onto Winona Avenue. Parking is straight ahead in the gravel parking lot.

From the Roanoke Valley Convention and Visitor's Bureau:

Start on Shenandoah Avenue NE. Turn right onto Jefferson Avenue. Make another immediate right onto Wells Avenue. Turn right onto Williamson Road. Travel on Williamson Road until reaching the intersection will Elm Avenue, turn left. Take I-581/US 220 S.Take the Colonial Avenue exit and turn to your right. Take Colonial Avenue north to the stop light and turn left onto Brandon Avenue. Travel 1 mile to the intersection of Brandon and Main Street. Bear right onto Main Street. Travel 0.6 miles through the stop light at the Getty Mart and take a right onto Winona Avenue. Parking is straight ahead in the gravel parking lot.

 

Roanoke River, David Smith Trail

The completion of the David Smith Trail was an important step towards the completion of the larger Roanoke River Greenway. The David Smith Trail curves around the Moyer Sports Complex and nearby Skateboard Park following the Roanoke River in the City of Salem.

Directions

From State Route 419:

Turn west on Apperson Drive, Rt. 11, toward Salem. Just beyond the first stoplight at the gas station and just before the Colorado Street bridge, turn left onto Riverside Drive. Follow Riverside along the river to Eddy Avenue. Turn right, cross the bridge. Take a right into the Moyer Complex and park near the river.

From Mill Mountain:

Turn left off J. P. Fishburn Parkway on to Walnut Avenue. Take Walnut Avenue to S. Jefferson Street and turn right. Turn right on Elm Avenue. Take I-581 N. At the end of I-581 N, merge onto I-81 N. Take Exit 140, Salem, Virginia. Turn right onto Thompson Memorial or Rte 311. Turn right onto W. Main Street or US 460. Turn left onto Union Street. The entrance of the Moyer Sports Complex parking lot (the parking area for the David Smith Trail) is across the railroad tracks on Union Street.

From the Roanoke Valley Convention and Visitor's Bureau:

Start on Shenandoah Avenue NE. Turn right onto Jefferson Avenue. Make another immediate right onto Wells Avenue. Turn left onto Williamson Road at the light and enter I-581 N via the on-ramp. Continue on I-581 until its terminus and merge onto I-81 N. Take Exit 140, Salem, Virginia. Turn right onto Thompson Memorial or Rte. 311. Turn right onto W. Main Street or US 460. Turn left onto Union Street. The entrance of the Moyer Sports Complex parking lot (the parking area for the David Smith Trail) is across the railroad tracks on Union Street.
