The Roanoke Valley
Greenway Commission was established with
the signing of an intergovernmental agreement
on
April 19, 1997. The Commission, appointed by
the four Valley governments (City of Roanoke,
Roanoke County, City of Salem, and Town of Vinton),
is an advisory body responsible for coordination,
guidance of implementation, and establishment
of standards and guidelines. In 1997, the members
of the Commission were appointed, elected officers,
adopted bylaws, formed committees and continued
the work begun by the Greenways Steering Committee.
The intergovernmental
agreement was revised and signed on January
23, 2009. The bylaws
were revised and adopted on October 28, 2009.
Membership

22 appointed members & 3 or more ex-officio, non-voting
members
Activities
include:
- Prioritize greenway projects
- Prepare implementation plans
- Publish standards and guidelines for construction
- Develop sign standards
- Develop agreements with partners
- Research grant opportunities

- Advise the four governments on greenway
opportunities and citizens’ interests
- Facilitate cooperation among jurisdictions
in greenway planning and development
- Recommend funding sources for greenway construction
- Develop uniform standards for design and
construction
- Pursue public/private partnerships for greenway
development
- Coordinate efforts to create a Valley-wide
greenway system
